The film meanders through a lifetime of inconsequential vignettes, and much like its central character, grasps hopelessly at the fading memories of former glories.

Sakura Guardian takes its time to bloom, but eventually builds to a moving ending about the power of familial love.

This melodrama about the travails of a war widow (Yoshinaga) in postwar Hokkaido strenuously jerks tears and shamelessly exploits core values, particularly motherly self-sacrifice and endurance in the face of suffering.
