The Resident hits all the obligatory notes in a film that's so generic that you can tell what the characters will do next much before they are primed for it.

It's a conventional thriller, short on originality and red herrings but atmospherically lit by Guillermo Navarro, who won an Oscar for his cinematography on Pan's Labyrinth.

Swank works hard but the Oscar-winner must wonder what she was doing in this hokum.

Much of the problem here resides in the one-note characters designated to the common tropes of damsel and psycho.
