Director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and screenwriter Richard Curtis (Love Actually) have divergent cinematic sensibilities, but they meld well enough in this bittersweet, slightly wacky musical fantasy rom-com.

There was too much Richard Curtis and not enough Danny Boyle in this case. I didn't feel like it was a melding of their voices that went particularly well.

Yesterday is billing itself as a feel-good movie, buoyed by its Beatles-fuelled soundtrack and quirky premise. But will it make you feel good? Only if your personal bar is pretty low to clear.

But its aim is to be a feel-good film that evokes charmed responses. While it may not do so in a particularly stellar way, I do think it succeeds at that.
