Storyline

In 1885, Africa is a succulent cake destined to be wildly divided and everyone wants a piece. A disturbed European king, a Pygmy working in a luxury hotel, a successful but lonely businessman, an enslaved porter, a young army deserter, a ghostly clarinetist. Some benefit from colonialism and greed. Others suffer racism and violence.

A feeling of surreal disconnection and an elliptical approach to storytelling distinguish This Magnificent Cake!

At 44 minutes, "This Magnificent Cake" may be a long short or a short feature. Either way, it's an intriguing, disturbing film, utterly unlike American studio animation.

Clocking in at under an hour, the omnibus of stories here are more connected by setting than anything, and the individual vignettes seem too short to generate sufficient standalone strength for the scope of the story the directors’ wish to tell.

...uses satire bordering on absurdity to refer to a horror that, if it were expressed directly, few could bear to watch.
