All to Play For

[Efira] turns in one of her most committed performances, all the more moving for its commitment to valorizing the kind of woman seldom treated on screen with such respect and compassion.

A hard-hitting portrait of motherhood.

What could feel like a cop-out plays as a humane strategy in an era where mothers, and indeed all kinds of people, are supposed to be sorted neatly into heroes and villains, where viewing and responding to art takes on the tone of a moral assessment.

You might think you know where this film is headed, but it absolutely had an ending that I was no expecting at all.
