...bleak, hard and for-sure nasty-ass female-killer drama, but it deserves a different kind of reputation than most grindhouse cinema...this is more character study that exploitation film; almost like a female version of Taxi Driver from the same year...

This is a very '70s film, so know that in some respects it is very retrograde in its depiction and analysis of trauma, but it's something very special and absolutely worth a watch.

The Witch Who Came from the Sea is actually a lot more ambitious than its sleazier moments might suggest, both as a conceptualization of distressed female sexuality and problematic assessments of fairy tales and classic mythology.

Works more as a psychological horror verging on slasher, not requiring such an ugly display of sexual violence as other 'popular' rape-revenge movies.
