It’s required viewing for any Bresson completist, and will prove fascinating to viewers with the patience for a nighttime drama about people who love foolishly, with all of their heart.

Bresson, tuning in to the times with wry views of rockers and hippies, exalts his protagonist’s self-sacrificing devotion as untimely and sublime.

The film is rescued from occasional moments of pretension by the gentle eroticism and absolute conviction with which it is made.

With the rich color and texture present in every frame of the film looking positively rejuvenated in 4K, there’s never been a better time for Four Nights of a Dreamer to finally take the prominent place it deserves in Bresson’s filmography.
