Storyline

The goddess Diana and her two attendants traverse the rugged terrain of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains in pursuit of the elusive wolf. An Engraver (Matthew Barney) furtively documents their actions in copper engravings and provokes a series of confrontations. The characters communicate through dance, letting movement replace language as they pursue each other and their prey.

I wondered how much really was being said, in the end, but Barney has a bold and distinctive style.

"Redoubt" is slow going but not uninvolving.

Barney's best work has occasionally pulled off the feat of being enthralling and ridiculous at the same time, though Redoubt sometimes ends up being merely the latter.

Redoubt is undoubtedly a continuation of Barney's unique modern day myth-making process. And its hypnotic images have to be experienced on the big screen.
