Storyline

Rosine Mbakam is invited to step in Sabine’s small hairdresser’s because it is dangerous in the street. She accepts and pushes in with her camera. Sabine’s stories and the customers’ joys, worries, problems and fears bring depth and life into the premises. At times, it feels like the entire African quarter of Brussels had squeezed in. Laughter abounds, anecdotes and life stories elicit emotions, and a male visitor brings a touch of flirt into the salon.

[A] stark, straightforward but subtly potent documentary...

Richard Brody

RTThe New YorkerOct 18, 2019

Within a single salon, and amid its handful of workers and customers, Mbakam discerns the fault lines of modern life, analyzes them in terms of personal experience, and displays them with an enduring and exemplary iconographic power.

Teo Bugbee

RTNew York TimesOct 16, 2019

With a view that is at once intimate and distant, Mbakam shows the duality of diasporic identity; she is never totally at home, and never totally without it.
