[Jane Wyman] converts a potentially turgid melodrama into an absorbing story of simple folk in an isolated Cape Breton Island village.

...the authenticity with which each narrative turn is depicted ensures a deeply immersive and rewarding cinematic experience that lingers on long after the screen fades to black.

It’s handled well by all of its principle cast, managing a feeling of genuineness, even though a few details aren’t entirely authentic; the characters are believable and everyone approaches their roles with sincerity.

It's an old-fashioned melodrama that worked as a tear-jerker.
