A psychological thriller fashioned as a bleak coming-of-age story, this adaptation by author Ottessa Moshfegh and her husband, Luke Goebel, of her breakthrough 2015 novel, works hard to capture the mordant detail and interior unease of the text.

Bound by the events of the novel but absent its enjoyably sociopathic sense of personality, it hits its marks and quietly trails off to nowhere: a trajectory unworthy of its protagonist.

This adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel is not a story of repression, but something more prickly, more envious, and more dangerous.

...an effective character study that’s perhaps not quite as consistently enthralling as Oldroyd has surely intended.
