Storyline

The story of how Dr. Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of Tupac Shakur, along with the Black Panthers and the Young Lords, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America in 1973 — a visionary project eventually deemed too dangerous to exist in America.

Donovan is a world-class storyteller, and she gives the Black Panthers and the Young Lords a human face, and shows just how strong and twisted the propaganda machine against them has always been.

Dope Is Death couldve benefitted from more cultural context and a broader examination of the Shakur family legacy, but the 78-minute film succeeds with its specific focus on holistic healing.

Dope Is Death is a vitally important documentary that is complemented by its contemporaries but stands equally well on its own.
