A Sherpa family breaks a taboo and climbs the most holy of mountains to earn money for their son’s education. They accompany a western expedition on East Wall of the Khumbakarna Mountain, a wall that has never been climbed before. ‘The Wall of Shadows’ tells the story of an encounter between a young Sherpa boy and an experienced western mountaineer at the foot of the sacred mountain. In its gentle, slightly meandering way, The Wall of Shadows asks important questions – about western entitlement, and whether scaling a mountain is the same as respecting it.

This is a balanced film that doesn’t pick sides.

As the journey proceeds, the discussions between the guides and the tourists provide subtle human drama to complement the powerful scenery.

This beautiful, meditative film by director and climber Eliza Kubarska captures the power of the Himalayas with great intensity.
