The film feels rather like a Kaurismäkian variant on Twin Peaks, with a soupçon of Fargo.

More than anything, though, I love Myllylahti’s cavalier boldness. He’s seen a vivid, peculiar story and just gone for it. He’s one to watch.

The Woodcutter Story provides the viewer a cinematic experience to reflect on life’s ups and downs and what we hold dear through the sporadic absurdity, all the while bathing in Scandi scenic beauty.

The Woodcutter Story is visually unexceptional, despite a few beautiful snowy vistas. Virtually every shot, every composition, looks roughly the same, flattening entire scenes into the same metronomic rhythm.
