Storyline

TJ is a mad bastard, and his estranged 13‐year‐old son Bullet is on the fast track to becoming one, too. After being turned away from his mother’s house, TJ sets off across the country to the Kimberly region of northwestern Australia to make things right with his son.
Grandpa Tex has lived a tough life, and now, as a local cop in the outback town of Five Rivers, he wants to change things for the men in his community.

Jim Schembri

RTThe Age (Australia)Jun 16, 2011

Mad Bastards is this year's Samson & Delilah; it bravely explores a host of hot-button issues with a deft blending of humour, sensitivity and often brutal frankness.

Paul Byrnes

RTSydney Morning HeraldMay 4, 2011

This is poised and meaningful Australian cinema, however we classify it.

David Rooney

RTThe Hollywood ReporterFeb 8, 2011

There's yearning as well as stubborn emotional isolation and anger in these characters, and any harshness in the observations of this richly satisfying film invariably is balanced by warmth.

Contrasts stunning outback landscapes with a raw, observational approach to its characters and their situations, the result being a heady mix of the epic and intimate.
