The Brave Bulls

On the credit side are the fine Mexican settings, exciting bull fight scenes and a sensitive portrayal of the troubled matador by Mel Ferrer. But the theme gets off the track too many times and is never sure of where it's going.

The Brave Bulls -- concerning a frightened torero who mysteriously loses his fear in the last five minutes -- is an exercise in powerful photography if not in lucid story-telling.

An earnest but only half-successful attempt to transfer to the screen Tom Lea's fine novel about a bullfighter and his problems. The product is mostly flashy and shallow and-to me sometimes distasteful, too.
