Balancing out the bleakness, however, is Oplev’s compassion and his depiction of the tenderness, rather than the prejudice, that Inger’s condition elicits from others.

For all that it is based on a true story, this film’s characterisation and narrative are massaged into a kind of sentimental drama. It rings false.

The writer-director, Niels Arden Oplev, based the film in part on his own experiences, and the movie keenly illustrates how stigma surrounding mental illness hurts neurodivergent people and their families.

Rose is not a flashy film and won’t appeal to cynics or those with no experience of neurodivergence, but its heart is in the right place and it's well worth watching.
