This is an angry – even polemical – film which sets out to shake up any complacency on a viewer’s part. Keep your popcorn fare, we are told, and pay attention to the world.

Tori and Lokita is an almost unbearably tense, lo-fi thriller that carries with it a stern, solemn moral weight. Long into a storied career, the Dardennes are making work as relevant and probing as ever.

You feel the hand of the filmmakers on the controls and sense those hands shaking with rage.

The Belgium-based, immigration-centred Tori and Lokita is a vintage piece of Dardenne cinema, but its naturalistic power falters in comparison to their previous films.
