This elegant romance anchors its more far-fetched plot points with delicately observed details and grounding moments...

The emo-erotic bubble of the visuals does what the story can’t quite manage alone, and captures the momentousness of first love.

There’s plenty to like, but I do wish the film was more interested in solving its own mysteries instead of just being a rushed imitation of Makoto Shinkai’s far better romantic fantasy anime film, Your Name (2016).

It’s a compelling sci-fi-fringed concept rife with potential as a literary metaphor, but ultimately leads to an empty love-is-all-you-need sentimental message.
