The canny level of observation -- at once casual, caustic and empathetic -- makes for a film that adds up to considerably more than the sum of its seemingly offhand parts.

Tia Kouvo’s debut feature, Family Time, digs into the minutiae of a seriously unhappy family who gather together and, well, do nothing but complain and peck at one another. Kouvo likes to keep the camera at a distance but the effect, for me, was tedium.
