This feels like a missed opportunity.

There is no exploration of the severity of French imperialism and no further analysis of the unknown soldiers of the war, which the film touts is mostly Black Africans.

The premise is a bit outlandish and movie-ish, and yet it’s handled with aplomb by both director and star, who avoid too many easy clichés while plunging us into the unique, unseen world of the African troops.

A classic movie in form and in its anti-war and anti-colonialist plea, Father & Soldier doesn't need drones or a camera attached to its characters as cannon fodder to convey chaos and horror. [Full review in Spanish]
