I was just howling and thinking "Wow, Flying Lotus... Your brain is very weird."

Each segment runs too long; and none of them has the kind of killer ending an anthology film deserves. But they do all deliver what they promise: a 1999 look and vibe, with moments designed to make audiences squirm.

“V/H/S/99” smartly dispenses with the wraparound plot that was always the worst part of all its predecessors, but finds a creative if unnecessary connective tissue.

The lack of a concrete frame narrative is a huge risk for V/H/S/99. I cannot say I disliked it. The filmmakers seem to deviate from the franchise’s formula in this manner, and that should be a good thing.
