Filmmaker Ai Yoshimura and studio MAPPA condense the florid tale into a two-hour anime feature that saps some depth from its characters but loses little of its larger appeal.

The Rose of Versailles takes creative liberties with history and creative swings, but it’s an indulgence just for curiosity’s sake.

As a remake of the original 1979-80 television series, this new film adaptation fails to say much.

The Rose of Versailles does its best to condense its narrative into a two-hour movie. Sadly, the film is more like an anime recap movie than a full feature, and not even a good one at that.
