Vera

That this compelling film somehow manages to feel hopeful is a minor miracle of careful artistry.

Vera Gemma, playing a version of herself, is at first off-putting but quickly becomes an endearing and sympathetic figure...The film is a hypnotic hybrid about survival in a world that values money and celebrity above all else.

While Covi and Frimmel's film could have easily made a mockery of Vera Gemma, the directors instead explore hard, ineluctable truths about social isolation and personal risk.

Vera Gemma possesses a vulnerability and a prolonged adolescent grace that makes her akin to the picturesque and fragile character played by Giulietta Massina in The Nights of Cabiria (Fellini, 1957). [Full review in Spanish]
