Storyline

In 1971 Salford fish-and-chip shop owner George Khan expects his family to follow his strict Pakistani Muslim ways. But his children, with an English mother and having been born and brought up in Britain, increasingly see themselves as British and start to reject their father's rules on dress, food, religion, and living in general.

Pakistan mixes with UK in cultural identity drama.

Puri plays George Khan as the Ralph Kramden of Manchester. He is bluff, tough, big, loud, and issues ultimatums and pronouncements, while his long-suffering wife holds the family together and practices the art of compromise.

Although East Is East is an ensemble piece, it is Puri's performance as George Khan that powers the plot. His increasingly desperate attempts to raise a family who embody his own, idealized values has both funny and tragic consequences.

Very funny and worth plunking down a few pennies for.
