Critics consensus

“Pulling off the heroic feat of fleshing out a dynamic new world while putting its champion's big, beating heart front and center, this Superman flies high as a Man of Tomorrow grounded in the here and now.”

Gunn’s Superman isn’t ashamed of its comic book origins and whimsical inventiveness. T

What sends Gunn’s “Superman” soaring over redundancy and overkill is the affection he feels for the Man of Steel in Corenswet’s uncalculated, cynicism-free portrait. Supie isn’t afraid to show his heart. He calls it the new punk rock. Maybe he’s right.

No, it’s not a perfect film, and it often handles these complex themes clumsily, but at the very least I have to applaud James Gunn for being so ballsy with what is such a well-known, beloved IP.
