Mother

“Mother” is on a mission that, its bold stylistic flourishes notwithstanding, isn’t ultimately forceful or persuasive... What does come through is Noomi Rapace’s accessible interpretation of Teresa.

Frustratingly, because too much of Mother’s storytelling feels overheated and superficially sensational, Mitevska fails to achieve the bold reconsideration she intends.

Mother veers on and off the path of righteousness, constantly summoned back to its duties of presenting a faithful, fact-based account of its subject. But it’s at its best and most fun when it plays like a giallo horror movie.

Noomi Rapace delivers a powerful performance in this thoughtful portrait of Mother Teresa. Rather than celebrating a saint, the film explores the doubts, contradictions, and humanity behind one of the 20th century’s most iconic figures.
