Light Years

Laced with twisty New Age musings on time, nature, progress, authoritarianism, and technology, René Laloux’s cinema delights in destabilizing our relationship with reality across the most unrecognizably alien planets ever committed to screen.

Seeing this trippy, time-bending film as Laloux intended will convince you that Gandahar deserves to be just as well known among animation aficionados as Laloux’s first feature, the 1973 cult classic Fantastic Planet.

It is a thinky, trippy odyssey that’s arguably even better than Laloux’s famous 1973 cult classic Fantastic Planet.

Janus Films’ 4K restoration of René Laloux’s Gandahar returns us to a time when popping a strange-looking tape into the VHS player could yield untold delights.
