Storyline

1972 was a turning point in Ilie Nastase's career: he won his first US Open, while also reaching both Wimbledon and Davis Cup finals. Moving back and forth in time and featuring amazing archive footage and exclusive interviews with top athletes, the documentary explores Nastase's highs and lows, the controversies that surrounded him and the enduring impact he has had on the world of tennis. Lovable, charming and generous, yet temperamental, arrogant and obscene, Mr. Nice'n'Nasty disrupted the old-fashioned etiquette of the sport in the 70s thus becoming its first rebel rock star.

The main problem with the film, directed by Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D Popescu, is that there's too much tennis and not enough on Nastase's personal and political life... Still, there's plenty to enjoy.

The directorial trio crafts a tightly spun, tension-filled documentary that is just as much fun as a match against Nǎstase.

Nasty is an infinitely watchable pop doc, but it might have dug a little deeper here and there.

This engaging, jam-packed documentary profiles the rise of the player they called Nasty, using the pivotal year of 1972 as a jumping off-point.
