Bruce Springsteen’s director of choice, Thom Zimny, does a capable job on this tour documentary, which charts rock & roll’s abiding spirit returning to stadiums with his backing band after a six-year absence.

Maybe Road Diary feels less up close and personal than the title would imply, or than some ravenous fans might hope. But in its joyous celebration of the band’s spirit, it nevertheless captures something of what makes them them.

Documentaries about performing artists are only as interesting as the artists being documented. In the case of “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” one needn’t fret. The Boss is entirely captivating.

Road Diary plays like a hyper-extended live music video and a more polished behind the scenes Blu-Ray extra than an actual film.
