The New Year That Never Came is a tragicomedy whose action takes place in a single day, before the revolution of 1989, in which the characters search for normality, safety, love, freedom and meaning in an absurd world.
A little overlong at 138 minutes, and a little opaque in its opening stretch, this is nonetheless a symphonic work that earns its sustained, unsubtle use of Maurice Ravel’s “Boléro” throughout its rousing climax.

It’s a confident and, at times, savagely funny work which, while a little over-long, builds to a blisteringly powerful conclusion.

The realism of Muresanu's staging and the performances, led by an outstanding cast, are beautifully achieved. [Full review in Spanish]

Mureşanu has a remarkable command of time and space to narrate a collection of small stories about ordinary people, civilians with little influence over the course of history who are...inseparable products of their time. [Full review in Spanish]
