The film’s refusal to abide by all the standard spook show antics of such films until the final act makes it feel more real, more incisive, more disturbing.

What Happened to Doris? does an especially good job focusing on how Doris faced not only disbelief of the supernatural in her attempts to figure out her situation, she also faced gendered disbelief.

What Happened to Doris? has some good scares, but it does not develop its own identity enough to be more than a haunted-house story wrapped around a fascinating real-world case.
