Funny, humane and mysteriously potent, this lifts off from a simple premise – a crew of old rummies at a dive bar engage in an impromptu singing contest – and it travels just far enough to linger in the memory.

Davis, who also edited and photographed 'The Singers,' does an inspiring job of evoking a dreary atmosphere, then piercing it with the unlikely power of song. [...] It’s glorious.

Full of genuinely great singing and performances across the board, it’s a mirthful, melancholic and moving musical of sorts that’s all wonderfully shot by Davis.

Not every moment lands with equal weight, and a few scenes feel slightly drawn out, but the overall effect stays grounded. ‘The Singers’ is a good film, though it asks for patience and offers little in terms of easy payoff.
