The cloying family dynamics are replaced with equally cloying, but infinitely more grating, gestures.

It has so much beautiful potential and some lovely performances, but loses its sheen because of its excruciating length and weaker writing in the second half.

Had the writing taken a different, practical route post the intermission, perhaps we would have had a contemporary love story that dealt with trauma and moving on. But this film wants to be partly contemporary and partly old-world melodramatic.
