Storyline

One night, Khalid, a young man, finds himself desperately looking for a lighter to light his cigarette, wandering through the streets late at night. At the same time, Youssef, a simple and hungry man, steps out of his home with a clear goal: to buy bread from a nearby shop. Meanwhile, Nabil, another young man, is driving through those same streets, lost in memories of a past love. Overcome with nostalgia, he drifts deeper into his thoughts.

Critics consensus

“Yet another predictable variation on the hoary old haunted-house movie, Darkness is an illogical, portentous mess.”

As in most bad horror flicks, intimations of unspeakable evil are supposed to distract us from the yawning gaps in story logic and character motivation.

Even as the darkness closes in, there is never any real sense of dread. The slow-burning terror soon fizzles out, as does the damp squib of an ending.

This haunted house horror has all the ingredients for a decent supernatural thriller but ends up overcooking all of them.
