...Bouchra’s anthropomorphic, neon-soaked world is jarring even before an early coyote-cow sex scene. But as its protagonist...struggles to make a film about how her identities alienate and liberate, Bouchra’s oddities gain a potent weight.

Bouchra and her family are coyotes... (honestly, it’s hard to tell, and it’s even trickier to work out the reasoning behind this particular creative decision). Still, this semi-surreal project is at least a boldly original work.

The directorial debut of the artists Meriem Bennani and Orian Barki, Bouchra is an audacious hybrid of animation, documentary and autofiction whose multi-layered form reflects its protagonist’s conflicted identities.

Bouchra is complex, nuanced, flip and funny, an exercise in bemused navel-gazing that could hardly be less dully self-indulgent.
