Song Sung Blue

This kind of film, like Hoop Dreams, is only possible when a filmmaker stakes a bet on an unknown outcome.

Manages to be compelling without being too much of a downer, or condescending in its view.

This Song Sung Blue is rough around the edges. And the real life Mike, especially, is a more jagged and confronting character than the one Hugh Jackman plays. But the documentary stopped me in my tracks and, yes, at the very end, it made me cry.

Even though the documentary is compelling, it is one of the rare times that the movie was easier to watch.
