The Ceremony

As the film becomes more ruminative, it does start to sag; Ihere’s one dream sequence too many and far too much screen time given to a ram, as magnificent as he is. It’s a slightly unsatisfactory conclusion to an impressive film.

Displacement, past trauma and individual morality come into question in this gorgeous, slow-burn but at times still dizzying treatise on nothing less than life, death and humanity. Tough but worth it.

If the film sometimes feels like its spinning in circles, and even if the characters are underdeveloped, there's a churning intensity that keeps us gripped.

The Ceremony is a strong feature debut from Jack King that highlights a particular immigrant experience through gorgeous cinematography and an engrossing narrative.
