The picture is too busy with laughs to worry much about chills, but no one ought to complain about that.

This stylish Victorian melodrama/murder mystery is less a thriller than a witty cat-and-mouse game played with both the audience and the target.

The juxtaposition between [humor] and the grimmer elements such as forensic examinations ... feels super, super weird, but the film remains compelling for plenty of other reasons that can smooth out the jarring switches.

[UPDATED 2025 REVIEW] The plot is wonderfully knotty, and Lucille Ball is appropriately spunky.
