Storyline

Mia, an aspiring actress, serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions and Sebastian, a jazz musician, scrapes by playing cocktail party gigs in dingy bars, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

“La La Land breathes new life into a bygone genre with thrillingly assured direction, powerful performances, and an irresistible excess of heart.”

It’s wistful and sad and beguiling.

It is joyful. It leaps off the screen.

RTOne Room With A ViewAug 25, 2018

A gorgeously photographed, unashamedly nostalgic, bittersweet marriage of the modern and the traditional, proving Chazelle's fantastic eye for musical sequences.

RTThe Saturday PaperAug 19, 2026

If individual set pieces are indeed dazzling, La La Land ultimately feels bloated by its references, by the mad rush to imitate all Chazelle’s inspirations.
