Chauranga

Both young actors are naturals horsing around on camera. Chaterjee, a pro who has worked in British films like Brick Lane, cuts a figure as the saucy but resourceful mother.

What's missing in between is a fluid narrative, which hobbles the film. Or is the choppiness down to cuts? Either way, this is a film which could have been more.

Chauranga is a lot more muted and quiet in its rage. But the thread of protest runs through it nonetheless.

Certain images, a few characters, their sins, eyes, flaws and hypocrisies - they stay with you, despite being restrained by the kind of idealistic filmmaking only an impassioned debutant can produce.
