For all its bloody and violent genre trappings, "Pilgrimage" is a gorgeously shot film that carefully renders the details of this fascinating historical period.

It's interesting as far as it goes, but you wish it would have gone farther.

What really makes Pilgrimage buzz ... is an impressively scuzzy ambience powered by repeated outbreaks of raw violence.

Made with a small budget and shot in thirty days, “Pilgrimage” sleekly maneuvers through its limitations instead of succumbing to them.
