Arbid tends to keep things simple for the most part, knowing that watching her protagonist's struggle to do things on her own terms is compelling enough.

The real revelation of the film is the seductive and stunningly beautiful lead actress, Manal Issa: her transformation is captivating, convincing, and seemingly effortless. She's a delight.

The movie's pre-9/11 time frame, 1993 Paris, sets it apart from other movies about immigration.
