Storyline

Yasuko, a housewife, lives in an urban high-rise apartment with her husband Satoru and her son Takuto. Annoyed by spam calls and door-to-door salesmen, Yasuko slams the door on a salesman’s hand when he tries to squeeze a flyer through the apartment's chained front door. He leaves, but the next day, her nightmare starts.

This is man, woman and chainsaw, sexed-up and stylised, exposing a Japanese housewife’s indoor appetites and anxieties.

Banmei Takahashi’s Door is a hidden thriller/horror gem, with an unsettling performance from Daijirô Tsutsumi that will be sure to keep you up at night.

Takahashi and the ensemble cast take what is a simple, home invasion narrative and create something truly special with its layers of horror, offbeat humour, stunning detailed sets, and quirky cinematography.

This demented and gory B-movie denouement closes out a tense, unsettling and deeply involving tale that feels remarkably fresh 35 years after it was first released.
