The picture holds the interest by its fine, sentimental story, rather than by brilliance in writing or action.

Mr. Stewart gives such a winning performance that it is almost impossible to imagine anyone else playing the role of the Chicago White Sox pitcher whose bright future was suddenly and tragically darkened by adversity in 1938.

Jimmy is plenty appealing as the shy, lanky pitcher.

Not only does it capture the flavor of the ball park and the feeling of actual play, but on at least two occasions conveys a fever of excitement.
