Storyline

A lesbian couple experiences microaggressions at a workshop upstate. Claire and her fiancée Monica embark from the boisterous streets of New York City to the Berkshires, where Claire has been invited to stage her latest work at a rural theater company. While Claire's actors question her ability to write heterosexual dialogue, Monica encounters her own source of micro-aggression in the form of Mutty, the groundskeeper.

Theodore Collatos amplifies dread in interesting ways, tinting the screen red when the couple fight and inserting jerky dream sequences of a confused, bleeding hen.

An allegory of sexual inequality in the guise of a relationship drama.

Tormenting the Hen plays with these expectations in an occasionally tense manner, but ends up being a movie of vague, ethereal ideas that don't hold as much dramatic weight as intended.

There's not so much story, but there's so much dread.
