Critics consensus

“Though the material is predictable and formulaic, Reese Witherspoon's funny, nuanced performance makes this movie better than it would have been otherwise.”

The premise is “fish out of water” perfection.

Legally Blonde cautions us that labels can be misleading – unless, perhaps, they’re the fabulous Prada ones that adorn Elle’s wardrobe.

No matter how often director Robert Luketic drops the beat -- faster, young sir, faster! -- Witherspoon never does. With her ductile physicality and undeniable charm, she remains acutely present even when everyone else has checked out.

A cut (and style) above other comedies of this ilk, Legally Blonde mainly succeeds because of Witherspoon's winning performance.
