The Long Day Closes

Everything proceeds with a dreamy allusiveness that’s the product of a consciousness simultaneously recollecting and enduring these events.

A masterpiece.

The Long Day Closes is essentially Davies's distilled recollection of himself at 11, a seemingly friendless child in a dismal working-class Liverpool, transfixed by his experience of the cinema.

The exacting textures and delicate moods, sustained in heavenly beams of light and the reflection of warm memories, gives the film a glow I’ve never seen in another film.
