Joel Coen's adaptation pushes the mythic parameters of the story, turning it into an existential thriller of strange and potent beauty.

Everyone exists in this ominous otherworld that feels so appropriate for characters who are caught between film and theater, ambition and loyalty, insanity and sanity, humanity and inhumanity.

It's not exactly cheerful holiday viewing, but this "Macbeth" is nonetheless a gift.

I’m not sure I’ve seen the supernatural forces in Macbeth rendered so well; the film generates a genuine sense of skin-creeping uncanniness.
