"One in a Thousand" is a fascinating, if at times trying, entry into a canon of queer films that aren't interested in neat narrative beats about coming out or coming clean and indulge instead in the messiness that is teenage desire in all its multitudes.

This is engaging, intelligent film-making and Navas's performers relax into the space that she creates for them.

Many of the specifics of the characters are glanced over, so it's hard to identify with them or understand what the stakes are for them.

Even if well-made, the film didn't do enough in its 2 hours to become more than a so-so flick in the LGBT film canon.
